Crater Lake National Park is one of oldest national park of United States, apparently the sixth oldest. The park is situated in the southern part of Oregon. It was declared as a national park by United States Government on 22nd May, 1902. The park is surrounded by hills and forests with the Cater Lake rimming the summit and is the only national park in the entire Oregon.
The lake’s depth is 1949 feet at the core and is the deepest lake of United States. With its average depth of 1148 feet it ranks the deepest lake of the Western Hemisphere and third deepest of the world.Crater Lake National Park envelops a total range of 286 sq. miles.
There is no stream flowing inwards or outwards from it. The lake’s water supply is solely dependent on natural downfall. The thick and pure blue water of the lake is one of the most striking features of the Crater Lake National Park.
History Of Crater Lake
Around 5000BC a chain of destructive eruptions occurred in Mount Mazama, a volcano in southern part of Oregon, and the peak of the mountain collapsed within the lava cavity, only to create a caldera about 6miles in width. Gradually with ages passing by, rain water and melted snow started accumulating in the hollow and eventually formed the lake. Prior to the peak crash Mount Mazama stood 11,000 feet from the surface level.

A team of gold prospectors constituting of John Wesley Hillman, Isaac Skeeters, and Henry Klippel discovered the lake and John Hillman was the first ever white man to find the lake, during one of their expeditions on 12th June 1853. They had initially named the lake as “Deep Blue Lake”, which was changed to the Crater Lake largely on the local public common demand. The exact point from where they got the first glance of the lake which is on the south-west side of the mountain rim is now called the Discovery Point. Greatly due to the initiative of William Gladstone Steel, the naturalist, the US Government recognized the vicinity a national park in 1902.

The nearest airports to the lake are Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford which is 80 miles southwest of the park, Eugene Airport at 120 miles northwest from the park, another airport at Klamath Falls nearly 60 miles southward of the park.

A boat trip around the lake and guided trips to the Wizard Island are definitely not to be missed.
Visiting a lake and not fishing around is very unlikely a fact to occur. Fishing is allowed in the lake but only by using artificial lures and flies.
Daring out scuba diving in the lake is a temptation that could hardly be resisted, but with a ranger’s permit and only after confirming the diving skills of the visitor.
Gift shops around the place offer pretty tempting gifting ideas from post cards to paintings, so do not miss out the window shopping at the least if not in a mood to shop.
There are more than 90 miles of tails around where hiking are allowed, but hiking within the caldera is banned. To ski around the untamed trails need permit.
Bicycling is also fun over there, but surely not on the trails. The blind curves and unmanageable steeps can lead to unwanted inconvenience. Experienced ones with the traffic and the paved way around the park can have a good time cycling around.
