A quarter of Americans say that they now travel alone “exclusively”, and half are excited about the prospect of doing it more in the future. Fortunately, there are a variety of potential destinations that are ideally suited to solo exploration.
New Jersey
The streets of Atlantic City are an excellent place to start if you want to remain in the US but still desire a memorable week away. Solo travelers can venture to the iconic boardwalk by day and then visit glitzy clubs by night. While staying here, you will also be able to log onto the best NJ online casinos and enjoy a wide range of card games and slots.
Newfoundland
If you want to get away from it all and breathe in fresh coastal air, then visit the Canadian island of Newfoundland with its wild and craggy coastlines and traditional fishing settlement. The lively port city of St. John’s, the easternmost city in North America, is a popular tourist destination. Here, you will find brightly-colored buildings, clothing boutiques and restaurants, but you won’t have to go far to get back to the remote wilderness.
New Zealand
Solo travelers with a penchant for outdoor activities will struggle to find a better location than New Zealand with its abundance of lush green spaces. While pretty much every town and city will be welcoming to tourists, the wide expanses of the South Island are perfect for hiking, kayaking, horse riding and bungee jumping. Queenstown is a hot spot here, having been dubbed the “adventure capital.”
Costa Rica
If you want a more relaxing trip, then look no further than Costa Rica with its plethora of golden beaches and diverse wildlife. Several destinations in this Central American region are ideal for solo travelers, including Puerto Viejode Talamanca, Nosara and Tamarindo.
Ireland
A little cooler but no less beautiful is the countryside in Ireland where friendly locals will point you to the best pubs and bars. Dublin is a great capital city with lots to offer if you want a more traditional urban trip, but don’t be afraid to venture to other remote regions for a more unique experience. The ability to converse in English makes this a top spot for first-time solo travelers.
Denmark
Denmark is statistically one of the happiest and safest countries in the world, making it a haven for tourists, who can explore Viking ruins and medieval castles. Bike paths are common here with many routes crisscrossing between towns across the country. Copenhagen is the most popular destination being the capital, but the old-world charm of Aalborg and Roskilde should not be missed either.
Thailand
Asian countries have been popular with backpackers for years now, and Thailand offers one of the best routes with its myriad of beaches and islands. The tropical climate, owing to its location just north of the equator, makes this a viable year-round vacation. You will probably find a plentiful supply of other travelers to talk to whether you decide to explore the Gulf Coast or Andaman Coast.
